ballet skirts

One of the things about being sick on Christmas is that the small final details don’t get done until much later. Case in point, sewing the ribbon on one of Phoebe’s ballet skirts.

I found this great pattern to make an adult size ballet skirt at The Selfish Seamstress, who, by the way, is really very UNselfish.

For those who don’t know, ballet skirts are fairly expensive…about $25 each. So if your daughter feels more comfortable a little more covered up and wants to wear them for every class or practice it can get pricey.

I remembered that I had some polyester chiffon from some previous projects in my stash was was able to make her three different skirts. I also cut the pattern down and make Esther a matching skirt out of one of the fabrics.

Here’s the pattern link. The pattern will be printed on about 8 pages. You’ll need to cut and tape the pages together. Then lay the pattern on the fabric and cut it out.

After you cut the fabric, zig zag around all the raw edges.

Here’s the hardest part, lay your ribbon on the right side (if your fabric has a right side) waist area of the skirt and pin the ribbon. The ribbon is really long so you’ll have a lot of overhang.

Sew the ribbon to the skirt. I used a small zig zag.

Go outside and have a photo shoot. Then, go to ballet class and have all the girls oooh and ahhh over your one of a kind skirt.

Any other ballet advice you can give the newbie ballet mom?

  1. These are cute! I have made a few ballet skirts and tumble shorts before. I did the ballet skirt with an elastic waist and it came out pretty well. I like this wrap style! No real tips, but yes, dance stuff is expensive! We look for clearance deals on leotards and I got tap shoes at a garage sale in a couple of different sizes, plus leotards.

  2. Cute skirt! I’d like to make one. Tips: We buy canvas split sole shoes on ebay for about $10. It’s tricky to get the fit right the first time, but then it’s easier to understand as the girls grow. I also look for their leos that way too.

    • That’s a good idea. Originally, I bought my older daughter leather shoes and a few months later I found out that they need canvas shoes for performances. I’ll have to look on ebay when we need more.
